Discipline Is Not A Four Letter Word

What comes to mind when you hear the word discipline?

Is it positive or negative?

Why?

Most people consider discipline as something negative and I suppose it is at the time the discipline is occurring. It may come from childhood when your parents disciplined you for bad or undesirable behavior but does that make discipline a bad thing? If you think of people that are “disciplined”, who comes to mind? Athletes that train for years for competition, members of the military that prepare for combat, bodybuilders that follow a strict diet and exercise regimen, doctors and lawyers that spend 8, 10, 12 years or more in school and training.

Deuteronomy 8:
Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, the Lord your God disciplines you. So you shall keep the commandments of the Lord your God by walking in his ways and by fearing him.(ESV)

Job 5:
17 “Behold, blessed is the one whom God reproves; therefore despise not the discipline of the Almighty. 18 For he wounds, but he binds up; he shatters, but his hands heal.(ESV)

Psalm 50:
16 But to the wicked God says: “What right have you to recite my statutes or take my covenant on your lips? 17 For you hate discipline, and you cast my words behind you.(ESV)

Proverbs 3:
11 My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, 12 for the Lord reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.(ESV)

Proverbs 5:
22 The iniquities of the wicked ensnare him, and he is held fast in the cords of his sin. 23 He dies for lack of discipline, and because of his great folly he is led astray.(ESV)

Proverbs 6:
20 My son, keep your father’s commandment, and forsake not your mother’s teaching. 21 Bind them on your heart always; tie them around your neck. 22 When you walk, they will lead you; when you lie down, they will watch over  you; and when you awake, they will talk with you. 23 For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life, 24 to preserve you from the evil woman, from the smooth tongue of the adulteress.(ESV)

Proverbs 12:
Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.(ESV)

Proverbs 13:
24 Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.(ESV)

Proverbs 15:
The way of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, but he loves him who pursues righteousness. 10 There is severe discipline for him who forsakes the way; whoever hates reproof will die.(ESV)

1 Corinthians 9:
24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. 25 Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. 26 So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air.27 But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.(ESV)

Ephesian 6:
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.(ESV)

Hebrews 12:
Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons?

“My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him.
For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.”

It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not disciplineIf you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. 11 For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.(ESV)

Discipline is not enjoyable at the time but we all know it is important to anyone desiring to live a happy, successful life – here and now and in the here after. Learn discipline from the Lord, allow Him to sand off the rough edges in your life to reap the blessings He has for you.

~God Bless
