Count Your Blessings

As Thanksgiving approaches, it’s always good to reflect upon your blessings. What is a blessing you may ask? A blessing is a favor or gift bestowed by God, thereby bringing happiness. I think a person’s attitude and perspective on life has a tremendous influence upon what they count as a blessing.

Philippians 4:
11 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.(ESV)

Some people are just more thankful than others but if you’re not a thankful person, why aren’t you? What has caused you to be discontented and thankless? I suppose it is possible that there is nothing good in your life and that you are completely without hope BUT with God all things are possible! And as long as you are alive, there is still hope that God can change your circumstances and make blessings out of cursedness(is that a word, should be if not) seeing as all blessings flow from God.

Count Your Blessings” by Johnson Oatman, Jr.
When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God hath done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,
And you will keep singing as the days go by.

Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God hath done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
Count your many blessings. Wealth can never buy
Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.

Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God hath done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

So, amid the conflict whether great or small,
Do not be disheartened, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.

Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God hath done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Paul And Silas In Prison

Acts 11:
22 The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates tore the garments off them and gave orders to beat them with rods. 23 And when they had inflicted many blows upon them, they threw them into prison, ordering the jailer to keep them safely. 24 Having received this order, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. 25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them,(ESV)

Exodus From Egypt

Exodus 14:
10 When Pharaoh drew near, the people of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they feared greatly. And the people of Israel cried out to the Lord. 11 They said to Moses, “Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us in bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Is not this what we said to you in Egypt: ‘Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.” 13 And Moses said to the people, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. 14 The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.”(ESV)

Above we have two examples from scripture, Paul and Silas are praising and thanking God at midnight after a day filled with beatings and imprisonment. The Israelites are accusing, questioning, and slandering God after He delivered them from slavery by a mighty hand, having blessed them with gold, silver and other plunder as they were leaving Egypt.

Instead of focusing on your problems, refocus on your blessings. Make a list, write down everything you can think of, regardless of how small, if it’s something that makes you happy or that you enjoy – it could be a sunset, a child’s smile, your pet or a slice of pie – count your blessings!
