Clearing The Way

Are you a stumbling block? A hindrance to holiness? A roadblock to righteousness? A detour to debauchery? Are you causing others to stumble and fall into sin?

Matthew 18:
“If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come! If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.(NIV)

1 Corinthians 10:
31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.32 Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God—33 even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.(NIV)

The Bible gives a stern warning about causing others to sin, “it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.” and suggests taking severe, drastic measures to prevent oneself from sinning, “if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.”

Proverbs 4:
10 Listen, my son, accept what I say,and the years of your life will be many.
11 I instruct you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths.
12 When you walk, your steps will not be hampered;when you run, you will not stumble.
13 Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life.
14 Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evildoers.
15 Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn from it and go on your way.
16 For they cannot rest until they do evil; they are robbed of sleep till they make someone stumble.
17 They eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence.
18 The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter till the full light of day.
19 But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble.(NIV)

Are your friends and the people you are hanging around with leading you down a wicked path? If so, then no longer associate with them.

Matthew 5:
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.(NIV)

Are you causing yourself to stumble? Are the things you read, watch on television, or look at on the internet causing you to sin? If so, then get rid of your computer, disconnect the internet, or sell your television. You might feel that is unrealistic but it is not as drastic as cutting off your hand!

1 Timothy 2:
likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.(NIV)

Women, are you causing men to stumble by the way you dress and conduct yourselves? How do you dress at work? When shopping? When attending church do you dress modestly and appropriately or are you dressing as if you were going out to a club?

1 Corinthians 7:
Now for the matters you wrote about: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband. The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.(NIV)

Husbands and wives are you causing your spouse to stumble because you are not fulfilling your martial duties? You are to dwell with each other according to knowledge being attentive to each other’s needs. If you are preoccupied with work, hobbies, or other activities, do you not think satan will place someone in your spouse’s path that will give them the attention you are failing to give? Whether intentional or not, it’s a stumbling block.

Ephesians 6:
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.(NIV)

Children are you causing your parents to stumble because of your disobedient behavior and bad attitudes? Parents are you causing your children to stumble because of unrealistic expectations and demands?

1 Corinthians 10:
31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.32 Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God—33 even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.(NIV)

You may feel that if someone is struggling or stumbling and falling into sin, it’s their problem and they need to deal with it but the Bible gives a warning about being the cause of someone else’s sin and gives an admonition to seek the good of others ahead of yourself.

Galatians 6:
Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.
Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.
But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.
For every man shall bear his own burden.
Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things.
Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.(KJV)

We are called to bear one another’s burdens, restore the fallen, and do good unto all – that would also include NOT causing others to stumble. We are to clear the path and remove stumbling blocks from the paths of others.
