Are there any giants in your life? Things that you run from or avoid? Things that you are afraid to attack? Maybe you’ve tried to overcome some giants but have been defeated. What happened? How did you attack the giant? What was your battle plan? What weapons did you use? Did you go into battle under your own power or through the power of God?
David and Goliath
1 Samuel 17:
37 And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”
45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, 47 and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.”(ESV)
David was going out to battle for the Lord, in the Lord’s name and for the Lord’s glory – it was not possible for him to fail. It was like that scene from True Lies where Arnold Schwarzenegger escapes from the interrogator, except David tells Goliath I’m going to take this rock, hit you in the forehead, then take your own sword and cut off your head. The battle was the Lord’s and it was already over! Give your battle over to the Lord and allow Him to gain the victory.
2 Corinthians 10:
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6 and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.(NKJV)
What kind of weapons are you using? If you are attempting to battle fleshly giants with fleshly weapons you’re going to fail, you need to be using the mighty weapons of God!
4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. 5 Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; 6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
By prayer and supplication to God you can accomplish great and mighty things through Christ. Have you prayed and diligently requested God’s help in overcoming your giant?
The Whole Armor of God
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,(ESV)
Have you put on the whole armor of God? How much of God’s armor are you actually wearing? Let’s see belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shoes of the gospel of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, sword of the Spirit – missing anything?
Chariots of Fire
2 Kings 6:
15 When the servant of the man of God rose early in the morning and went out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was all around the city. And the servant said, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” 16 He said, “Do not be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” 17 Then Elisha prayed and said, “O Lord, please open his eyes that he may see.” So the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.(ESV)
There’s no need to fear, the Lord of Hosts is here! Pray to the Lord that He may open your eyes that you might see the great and mighty things that He can do. You’ll win the battles when you allow the Lord to fight for you!
