Exchanging The Eternal For The Temporal

If I were to offer you $100 today or $1 per day for the rest of your life, which would you choose?

Hmmm… tough decision. I could really use the hundred, that’s almost two tanks of gas but on the other hand a dollar a day could really add up.

Which would you choose? Why??? Your decision is probably based on several different factors:

1 how badly you need an immediate $100

2 do you trust me to follow through on the offer of giving you $1 per day for the rest of your life, after all, $100 in your wallet is better than the promise of $1 tomorrow

3 how good your math and critical thinking skills are

4 do you live in the here and now with no thought for tomorrow

We live in a fastfood, microwave oven, dvr society. We want it now if not sooner! If we have to wait a little too long at Starbucks, we get aggravated. According to a CNN Money report, 49% of Americans are not saving anything toward retirement. We are an impulsive, rash, hasty society that gives little thought for the future or eternity.

Eternity is a somewhat difficult concept to grasp, eternity…I mean, that’s like forever! I don’t know anyone that’s been around that long or even half that long. How can something last forever? Sure when you were a kid you thought you would be in school forever but that’s not the case. My 20 year high school reunion has come and gone and now it doesn’t seem like I was in school for very long at all. My oldest son will be turning 16 very soon and it just seems like a few years ago that he was toddling around, kinda scary considering I was married at 18 and that was 22 years ago, though that does seem like forever…

Eternal: without beginning or end; lasting forever; always existing

Temporal: enduring for a time only; temporary; transitory

James 4:13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; 14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.”(NKJV)

Are you exchanging the eternal for the temporal? Do you live in the here and now with no thought for tomorrow? Do you act hastily or impulsively only to regret your decisions later? Don’t get me wrong, make sure to stop and smell the roses, slowdown to enjoy the life with which God has blessed you. You can go to the other extreme and be sooo Heavenly minded that you are of no Earthly good. Do not neglect the things that are most precious and valuable for the cheap imitations this world has to offer!

Matthew 6:19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.(ESV)

What things are of eternal value? What are the things in life that are most important? They are probably not things at all. What treasure is it that can be stored up in Heaven?
