Are You Listening?

(wife speaking)…..and……then……..and…..also……

(husband listening)blah….. blah…… blah……. blah

(wife questioning)are you listening to me?

(husband responding) yes dear

To his defense, the husband was listening, in the strictest, technical definition of the term, he heard sounds coming from his wife’s mouth but he did not give attention to what was being communicated with any effort to understand. Sadly that’s how most of us listen to God.

The Shema

Deuteronomy 6:“Now this is the commandment, and these are the statutes and judgments which the Lord your God has commanded to teach you, that you may observe themin the land which you are crossing over to possess, that you may fear the Lord your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, you and your son and your grandson, all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged. Therefore hear, O Israel, and be careful to observe it, that it may be well with you, and that you may multiply greatly as the Lord God of your fathers has promised you—‘a land flowing with milk and honey.’

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.(NKJV)

Ezekiel 12:Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying: “Son of man, you dwell in the midst of a rebellious house, which has eyes to see but does not see, and ears to hear but does not hear; for they are a rebellious house.

Matthew 13:He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”

Jesus used the phrase “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!” often when giving parables and explains his purpose for using them in Matthew chapter 13. To the Elect, His words were spiritual food, to the others just entertaining stories.

The Purpose of the Parables

Matthew 13:10 Then the disciples came and said to him, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” 11 And he answered them, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. 12 For to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 13 This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. 14 Indeed, in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says:

“‘“You will indeed hear but never understand,
and you will indeed see but never perceive.”
15 For this people’s heart has grown dull,
and with their ears they can barely hear,
and their eyes they have closed,
lest they should see with their eyes
    and hear with their ears
and understand with their heart
and turn, and I would heal them.’

16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear17 For truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.(ESV)

When you attend church are your hearing the preacher speak but failing to listen to the message? Are you  allowing the Spirit of God to apply what you heard to your heart that you might reap an eternal benefit from the Word?

The Parable of the Sower Explained

Matthew 13:18 Hear then the parable of the sower: 19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. 20 As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, 21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. 22 As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. 23 As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”(ESV)

Not by Bread Alone

Matthew 4:But he answered, “It is written,“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,   but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”(ESV)
